Everyone has experienced anxiety and depression at some point in their life. Not everyone, however, will experience chronic anxiety, obsessive worry, and prolonged depression. This is because people with anxiety disorder have an underlying issue that has become part of their self-concept. Emotionally resilient people – that is, those with a healthier self-concept – continue to thrive during or after difficult life circumstances. In contrast, those with a weakened resiliency suffer more bouts of prolonged stress or impairment. Certain anxiety or depression sufferers may have an inherited tendency to experience a great deal of self-focus or avoidance during stressful times. The environment we grew up in may have activated these inherited tendencies. Or, perhaps we inherited a vulnerability to a certain temperament or personality trait that leads us to frequently create similar conditions that ultimately lead to anxiety or depression. We don't want to rule out the biological/psychological/and social contributions towards our weakened resiliency. However, this program is more concerned with the psychological aspects to suffering.
